This year was the best yet for our annual summer camp! Children from Soledad and Gonzales
farm worker camps as well as disabled young adults from our Sonflowers group participated
in five days of fun activities, good food, and positive attention. We camped amidst the
beautiful redwoods of Big Basin State Park in Santa Cruz. We were able to play in the
San Lorenzo River a couple of afternoons, spend a day at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk,
and hike through the forest. We also played games, sang songs, put on a skit, and did crafts,
including a huge banner made up of individual pictures done by everyone at camp describing
why each person is special. The whole week filled campers and counselors with wonderful
memories and a strong sense of relationship. We are all looking forward to next year's
Camp St. Francis.
Camp St. Francis is also the happy sponsor of year 'round field trips stemming from the children's
work and participation in activities at Margaret's Place. We have been able to go hiking in
the Pinnacles, roller skating, visited Chuck-E-Cheese, movies, the Monterey Bay Aquarium,
the Exploratorium in San Francisco, and much more! These outings offer the children opportunities
to expand their horizons, participate in new activities, and have healthy fun outside of the camps.
